Coaching Why It Is More Important Than Ever In 2013

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Coaching: Why it is more important than ever in 2013 I don’t run into many senior lawyers who understand. Do the senior lawyers in your firm realize it is way more challenging for a young lawyer to develop a book of business in 2013 than it was when the senior lawyers did it? In mid-sized and larger firms today, income partners and senior associates go to work each day with the full knowledge that their firm has raised the bar on what it takes to get promoted to equity partner at the very time it is more difficult than ever to meet the standards. I hope you saw my recent blog: Client Development/Career Coaching: Who will succeed?  If you missed it, I argue that attitude trumps talent every time and argue that your most motivated lawyers are the ones who will benefit the most from coaching. I saw these quotes in a Harvard Business Review article:  What Can Coaches Do for You?    I am sharing them with you to support my proposition that coaching should be aimed at lawyers with the greatest potential and to suggest that coaching is more important in 2013 than ever before. (Note: I added references to lawyers and law.) Ten years ago, most companies engaged a coach to help fix toxic behavior at the top. Today, most coaching is about developing the capabilities of high-potential performers. Executives (lawyers) who get the most out of coaching have a fierce desire to learn and grow. There’s no question that future leaders (rainmakers) will need constant coaching. As the business environment becomes more complex, they will increasingly turn to coaches for help in understanding how to act. The kind of coaches I am talking about will do more than influence behaviors; they will be an essential part of the leader’s learning process, providing knowledge, opinions, and judgment in critical areas. These coaches will be retired CEOs (lawyers) or other experts from universities, think tanks, and government. Is your firm providing coaching opportunities for your high-potential lawyers, or are you just requiring them to meet higher standards in the “new normal” era?       I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

This incorporates your expert nearness on the web, which incorporates your transferred resume and LinkedIn profile. Ensure that every one of them are state-of-the-art. Resume groups have changed much in the course of the most recent decade. On the off chance that your resume despite everything opens with an Objective area, it's an ideal opportunity to improve it. Nonetheless, inward information from LinkedIn has demonstrated that profiles without an image get less perspectives and less communication so dress expertly, grin, and look enthusiastic. Overhaul your pursuit of employment techniques Managers don't fill opportunities the manner in which they used to. Less occupations are publicized in a paper; organizations select to distribute their employment opportunities online rather, so don't stay with an old fashioned methodology for your pursuit of employment! Paper promotion areas don't work any longer, and sending your resume to an organization and keeping an eye out for them to react is probably going to be disillusioning too. However, the quiet doesn't mean there are no employments out there for mid-and late-vocation competitors work declarations simply aren't the place you last observed them! Have a go at enlarging your net. Take a gander at LinkedIn Jobs, online employment sheets, and industry-explicit occupation sheets that are extraordinary to your pursuit of employment. Figured pioneers and bloggers can at times share work declarations for businesses in their field, too. Burrow around and you may be astounded by the abundance of choices you didn't understand existed. Additionally, system, system, and system. You have the irrefutable bit of leeway of knowing individuals in the business, so use it! Be set up for protests It's critical to recollect that according to an employing administrator, each and every applicant has probably some warnings. For one expert, it may be a hole on the resume. For another person, it may be visit work jumping or an out-of-state street number. Furthermore, indeed, age could be a possible worry too on the two sides of the range. Simply recall that employing chiefs may have misgivings about your capabilities, familiarity, and fit with the group too, not just about your age. Try not to accept that as a sign that you've fizzled and don't get protective. Rather, attempt to see the circumstance from the employing administrator's viewpoint when you plan. On the off chance that you were from their perspective, what concerns would you have? What inquiries would you pose, and what answers would you find empowering? At that point, get ready so your reactions are insightful and viable and facilitate your imminent business' concerns. Keep your abilities current The issue with some more established, experienced applicants is that they don't keep awake to date on innovation and become less alluring than somebody who has. Innovation changes quick, so show your imminent boss that you will get down to business. To do that, it's imperative to comprehend what innovation is table stakes for the activity you are looking for and furthermore to have a sense for what's on the horizon. An enlightening meeting with the organization you're keen on, joined with a cautious audit of the expected set of responsibilities, should point you the correct way for your examination. Regardless of whether you aren't searching for work in innovation, it's basic to have a degree of solace with utilizing innovation in your pursuit of employment. Skype, video conferencing, and internet planning are the new typical for interviews. Match the employing supervisor's solicitation for data trades: If they are requesting you to email answers to a couple of explicit inquiries, don't demand an in-person meeting! Try not to undermine yourself This point is difficult to over-underscore. Very frequently, more established employment competitors are the cause all their own problems. At the point when a competitor is pompous of their capabilities, pokes a fun at their age, or in any case implies that age is an issue for them, they can hurt their possibilities even with a nonpartisan or thoughtful questioner. All in all, what would it be a good idea for you to pay special mind to dodge this? Be readied that the employing administrator or the HR expert leading the underlying meeting will be more youthful than you. Try not to go into the discussion feeling like you need to shield your entitlement to be there. On the other side, don't be pretentious of the individual talking you since they are more youthful. Remain concentrated on your commitment guarantee to the organization, center aptitudes and capabilities, and your experience that will make you an advantage for the group. Related:Don't Answer These Off-Limits Interview Questions Ensure you are thinking about the correct managers Indeed, it's conceivable to work for an organization that will esteem your experience and prize you for being actually what your identity is! Furthermore, let's face it, a few organizations are simply superior to others at doing that. Thus, glance around and filter through your planned businesses cautiously. Peruse organization surveys on Glassdoor (while taking other factors into consideration, obviously) and get some information about their encounters. Discussing your system, one last note: The individuals you know can assist you with discovering openings that haven't been (and may never be) posted freely. Keep those associations dynamic, both during your pursuit of employment and keeping in mind that you are utilized. Recall that in the event that you present a convincing defense, a position or an opening may be made for you explicitly. Battling ageism in your senior quest for new employment Age separation during the pursuit of employment occurs. It's sad. It ransacks our work environments of significant experience and noteworthy benefactors. Also, with regards to the business side, there's little you can do to control it past documenting a claim on the off chance that you accept age separation has occurred. Be that as it may, you can do a great deal to control your side. Catch up on your expert nearness, present a convincing case by showing your ability, sharp aptitudes, adaptability, and vitality, and go in arranged to address potential protests without getting protective. That last point is fundamentally significant. As a more seasoned activity up-and-comer, you may feel like the world is scheming against you. However, actually the pursuit of employment process is intense for everybody. At the present time, another school graduate may be sitting at a party time, griping to his companions that nobody will enlist him since he has no understanding, or there's most likely a moderately aged competitor out there who's persuaded that they're too old to even think about getting a great job. Age is relative, so remain positive. Mood killer the negative news. Get an exercise, take a walk, or put resources into a resume change to ageism-confirmation your resume. Accenture Survey Reveals New Graduates Not Being Trained on the Job - Hallie Crawford

Accenture Survey Reveals New Graduates Not Being Trained on the Job I encourage not just new grads to read the recent Accenture 2014 College Graduate Employment Survey because it reveals important trends about the workplace for professionals from new grad to mid-career. Here’s an excerpt: “The research reveals that many companies are not providing the talent development and training programs expected by recent college graduates. The vast majority of students graduating from college in 2014 (80 percent) expect their first employers to provide them with a formal training program, however, 52 percent of students who graduated from college in the past two years say they did not receive training in their first job.” This reminds us of one of the #1 mistakes professionals make in managing their career development â€" not finding a mentor. It’s on you to do this now. Gone are the days of apprenticeships; your company may or may not provide a mentoring program. It’s up to you to take charge of your success and development by finding a mentor and taking charge of your own education when necessary. Now this doesn’t mean shell out thousands of dollars you don’t have for a training program. But find ways to educate yourself â€" books, free online training (courser.org for example), or ask your employer if they will assist. The bottom line is, it falls on you to be proactive about your progression. Hallie Crawford Certified Career Coach P.S. Preparing Yourself For The Five Hardest Questions Youll Get Asked At Interviews - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Preparing Yourself For The Five Hardest Questions You’ll Get Asked At Interviews - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach The job interview. Considering the importance that most companies place on it to determine the person who will be the best fit for an open position, it’s not surprising that it causes most interviewees sleepless nights and bags of nervous energy. The plethora of books that have been written about ‘how to be a good interviewee’ highlight how to get your resume in order, how to handle nerves, how to look confident when it’s the last emotion your brain can find, and so on. But, all in all, it’s simply a conversation where you are trying to persuade and influence one or more people that you are the best candidate for the role you’re trying to fulfil. The company naturally need to find out if you’re the one who will take their company forward and achieve better results than if you weren’t there. Hence the depth of questions that are asked to ‘test’ your ability to think on your feet, when under pressure and uncover your character and talent. Interviewers want to know, not only if you can do the job, but also what you’re like as a person. So they often cover points that will test your thinking and confidence to the limit. Here are five of the most testing questions we’ve come across and some suggested answers that might get you through them. ‘What got you to this point in your life?’ The interviewer wants a clear picture of how you view yourself, and you must be careful not to be too generic and waffle too much. Cover areas that have tested you, and made you the type of person you are today. Highlighted successes and the characteristics those achievements developed in you. Build confidence in the interviewer that you have the perseverance to overcome challenges, the capacity to think creatively and the ability to learn new ideas. ‘What skills do you think you’re lacking?’ The interviewer is looking at how you deal with weaknesses. Don’t lie about this, as everyone has something they need to develop. But you shouldn’t draw negative attention to a specific weakness that will make them think you wouldn’t be the best fit. Mention a quality that might appear a weakness but actually makes you appear helpful to the company. Then back it up with examples of how you have or are trying to work on it. For example, say something like ‘Sometimes I find it too easy to say ‘Yes’ and get overcommitted. I’ve been trying to set myself limits and am becoming more organised with my work and time’ ‘Why should I hire YOU?’ The interviewer is looking at how you ‘sell’ yourself while being honest and trustworthy. You have to demonstrate why you’re the best person and the best fit for the job. Ensure you know specifically what the job entails and highlight the skills and talents that you can bring to it. Remember to identify how you have used those skills in previous positions ‘What criteria do you use to judge your own performance?’ The interviewer wants to know if you are externally or internally motivated. Many people need to have the approval of a manager or someone else before they are content with their work. Others know they have done a good job themselves, without the need for external praise. Say that you set yourself a high standard for every piece of work that you do, and strive for excellence when possible. Give examples of when you have completed work and been complimented by the client or your manager, and used that as a benchmark to spring forward. You want to convince the interviewer that you have the confidence and ability to achieve without being supervised every step of the way. ‘Why did you choose to apply for a job with US?’ The interviewer wants to know what background work you did before the interview and are wondering if they are just one of many job applications you have made because you’re desperate! Highlight the things you know about the company, the job and the expectations they have of you, and then describe how they match your values and ideals. Outline how your past history matches with their expectations. Naturally, the interviewer will appreciate you’re probably looking at other companies, but they will want to know how valuable a team member you would become if they hired you. Being prepared for these and other questions designed to identify how valuable you would be to the company will give you confidence and belief that you will make the right impression. They Didn't Have A Good Reaction To Your Success Stories You may have an account of a triumph that in the past has gotten thumbs up or grins from your interviewer(s). On the off chance that you recount to a similar story with a similar pizzazz, and you don't get the equivalent or comparable response, it might imply that they aren't tuning in, or they didn't get the purpose of the story or missed the significance of the achievement. It could be an indication that you have neglected to interface with the interviewer(s) from the beginning, and they aren't as mindful as you need them to be to get why you are the most-qualified up-and-comer. They Seemed Bored And Distracted In the event that the questioners continue taking a gander at their telephone or PC screen, they might be showing their absence of enthusiasm for what you need to state, or they may simply be diverted by something that is going on that is outweighing your meeting. Is it safe to say that you were succinct in your reactions or did you me ander aimlessly? Did you keep to the issue of your capacity to carry out the responsibility or did you veer off into the individual and end up sharing too much?If the meeting has clearly turned sour and you are almost certain you won't get an offer, credit it to great experience and proceed onward. Gain from the experience. Abstain from accusing the whole circumstance for the interviewer(s). Maybe you could have planned something for draw to their advantage and adjust their perspectives on you during the meeting. Assume liability for your exhibition and attempt to make sense of how you can improve pushing ahead. Gain from your missteps, alter your methodology if essential, and proceed onward. Maybe that activity wasn't the best one for you in any case. Perhaps not landing that position is something worth being thankful for. It lets loose you for a superior open door which might be practically around the bend. Meetings are a fundamental piece of each pursuit of employment. Figure out how to get ready. Figure out how to deal with your nerves. Practice with a companion or a mentor until you sharpen the responses to the inquiries you make certain to be posed, and you can convey them with certainty. What is your Primary Claim

What is your Primary Claim When I do LinkedIn Profile strategy sessions, I talk about your primary claim. What is the thing (or small collection of things) that you are promising to your future employer? Or, put another way, what is your value proposition? I like focusing on a primary claim because I think too many job seekers well, pretty much everyone, including marketing professionals for companies, dont narrow down to the main, primary thing. We are afraid of getting too specific, lest we leave something out of our marketing message.  What if we narrow our message down and exclude people who would otherwise hire us, or pay us money? Better to just give the entire list of our offerings, or claims, right? I challenge you, like I challenge the people I do a LinkedIn session with, to figure out what your PRIMARY claim is. If you had to narrow it down to one phrase, or tagline, what would it be? You can tell your story, and help people understand your breadth and depth, with what Ill call secondary claims (and some other techniques/tools), but make sure you understand and communicate your primary claim. Understanding your primary claim makes it easier for you to communicate what you need to in interviews, while networking, and on your marketing documents (resume, profiles, etc.). Communicating your primary claim well makes it easier  to know how to talk about you. This is a profound concept. If you can communicate your primary claim well, the people on the receiving in can know how to communicate about you. If you dont know what your primary (or secondary) claims are, how in the world are they going to talk about you the right way?  Dont rely on luck when it comes to your branding. 4 Ways to Use LinkedIn to Land a Job When Your Boss is Snooping

4 Ways to Use LinkedIn to Land a Job When Your Boss is Snooping Sssssshhhh! You are about to make one of the most important LinkedIn updates of your career  and you know you must proceed with caution. Does this sound like something you would do? Are you looking for a new job and dont want the entire digital world to know? Are you afraid to highlight your work experience because your employer limits what you can disclose on social media? Dont worry. You dont need to have the most detailed LinkedIn profile to attract attention; all you need is bait and a few privacy settings that will help you to keep your job search confidential. For those of you who arent ready to use  LinkedIns Open Candidate  feature,  here are four other ways to secretly use LinkedIn to land a job. 1. Update Your Privacy and Settings Area Before you start updating LinkedIn with all of your recent accomplishments, new and improved photo, and catchy headline, you want to make sure that your connections arent notified. You would probably just cringe if your boss walked by your desk and says, You’ve been very active on LinkedIn lately. Are you in the market for a new job? You can avoid any awkward LinkedIn conversations with your boss and colleagues by updating your  Privacy Settings. You can find this section by moving your cursor over your photo in the top right corner of your homepage and by selecting Privacy Settings.  You can also type  https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/  into your browsers address bar to access the page.  Click on  Privacy  to update  your settings. You can also disable your updates by going to your  LinkedIn homepage.  If youre on your desktop, move your cursor over Profile at the top of your homepage and select Edit Profile. Then scroll down and find the Notify Your Network area (displayed below the Whos Viewed Your Profile stats). Change your toggle to read,  No, do not publish an update to my network about my profile changes. 2. Maintain an Active Profile One way to attract potential employers to your profile while keeping your job search private is to regularly update your status. Share interesting articles related to your industry and comment on relevant updates that  industry leaders share.  If you are a career changer, post articles and updates about  topics that reflect the industry that you want to transition into. Then, take advantage of LinkedIns publishing tool to show your credibility in your new area of interest. If you quote experts in your article, you will receive bonus points from potential employers. Tag those experts in your post updates when you share the articles across various social media platforms. Dont forget to sprinkle keywords throughout your profile and use those keywords when you share updates. Your goal is to find ways to increase your profile strength and attract eager recruiters to your LinkedIn page. You also want to make sure that recruiters are motivated to send you personal messages or emails. 3. Join LinkedIn  Groups Be careful when you start clicking on all the LinkedIn groups that catch your attention. All of those memberships will appear on your profile, and you know who is probably filling in as secret FBI to report all of your suspicious updates. Fortunately, you have the option to hide those new memberships by  changing the visibility of a group on your profile. Keep in mind that other members of each specific group will be able to see anything you post. So, the best way to take advantage of LinkedIn groups  while keeping your job search off the market is to reach out to fellow group members privately. If you have a question about a particular industry, post your question in the group. Maybe  you want to build relationships with other members by  commenting on posts and sharing their work. If you want to comment on a group discussion, you can click “Reply privately”. You can also  can send a private message to the person and reference the group discussion. Remember that there is a maximum of 50 groups per person so choose wisely. 4. Build Your Industry Network   First, make sure you have over 500 connections. If you have under 500, the exact number of connections will be visible at the top of your profile. Who wants to look like a LinkedIn rookie, or worse, a professional snob? Once you hit the magic 500 connection goal, your network quantity becomes your little secret. Keep in mind that you can have a maximum of 30,000 connections with a standard LinkedIn profile. If you click on “Network” at the top of your home page, you can view your total connections. Audit your list of connections to determine any gaps in your network. If you want to explore the world of marketing, at least 25% of your network should be in marketing. This will increase your chance of landing an opportunity in that area. Need help diversifying your LinkedIn connections? Attend professional networking events and industry related workshops and meetings. Dont just exchange business cards; share your LinkedIn account information too! LinkedIn allows you to learn more about the people you meet beyond a five-minute conversation. Your new connection may be the missing link between you and your dream career! . Image credits. Main.   Network.      Network.

Small Business Owners How to Get Your Life Back - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Small Business Owners How to Get Your Life Back - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The first post of this series, Big Challenges for Small Business Owners, examined the three biggest challenges  owners face: people, finances, and time. In the The Small Business People Puzzle:  Part 1 and Part 2, we looked deeper into the challenge of finding, selecting, attracting, orienting, training, motivating, and retaining the right people to ensure a small business  has the human resources to be  successful. Likewise, the last post addressed finances. Now it’s time to take a look at the last challenge which is time. Most small business owners I meet are working more hours than they desire and are not happy with their work/life balance. In my Big Challenges post I suggested some beginning actions to help business owners gain more control over their time. Now, let’s dig a little deeper. One of the most effective methods for small business owners to reduce their work hours is to increase the work they delegate to direct reports. All too often, owners fail to increase their delegation in proportion to the growth of their employee base. As noted in Why Can’t You Get Anything Done?, an article based upon a talk given by noted Vistage speaker Jim Alampi (www.alampi.com), “Unfortunately, there is often a learning curve involved in learning to delegate, and small-business owners don’t have the time or patience for that. Delegating involves empowering â€" and trusting â€" your employees.” This statement hits at the heart of the issue. Entrepreneurs frequently start out wearing many hats and out of necessity make all critical decisions in their company. As the company grows and the number of decisions to be made explodes, they tend to only let go of those decisions they see as non-critical. This forces their direct reports (and others) to continually bring issues and decisions to their boss’s door. Breaking this dynamic and gaining back hours means you, as a business owner, must change your behaviors and help your people understand that you are making permanent changes that empower them to make more and more decisions … even at the risk of making mistakes! Here are a few basic questions to consider in formulating a plan of action for delegating more and working less (hours): Which of your people do you trust to do the right thing? Are there things that are preventing you from trusting in them enough to delegate more, or do you just need to break an old habit? If you trust their ethics but feel they are not knowledgeable enough to make good decisions, what can you do to make them more knowledgeable and when will you do this? If you are in the majority and complain about long work hours while failing to delegate in a reasonable manner, guess who’s the problem? That’s right. YOU are the problem. Your people won’t step up unless you give them clear authority and assure them you don’t expect them to be perfect. So, what’s it going to be? Continue running yourself ragged and failing to develop your people, or make an honest effort at delegating more so you have the opportunity to get your life back? I hope you choose the latter and wish you the best!
