Top 3 Things to Do to Maximize Your End-of-the-Year Job Search

Top 3 Things to Do to Maximize Your End-of-the-Year Job SearchTop 3 Things to Do to Maximize Your End-of-the-Year Job Search We love the holidays, dont we? The food, the social events and of course, the vacations make us feel warm and fuzzy months in advance. Many think the holidays are a time to relax and say, No one is hiring right now anyway. Everyone is on vacation, so why bother? But with only a handful of days left in 2017, now is the time to kick your job search strategy into high gear. After all, hiring managers and recruiters arent just staying at home drinking eggnog for all of December - they still have positions to fillHere are 3 things you can do heading into 2018 to stay ahead of the curve .Step one you need to know where youve been before you know where youre going. Dreams change . Ask yourself, Do I still want to be in this industry? In what capacity? Are my talents being utilized here, or do I want to move on? From there, make a list of the things you require in your career. All of unterstellung questions will give you a clear direction on how to move forward and a way to determine your approach.Sometimes, I compare preparing for a job search to doing taxes. The same way youd gather receipts, paycheck stubs and paperwork, you need to gather the information that will impact your personal brand . Review the year and write down information such as important project dates, budgets, or titles, as well as how you made an impact. Did you increase revenue, decrease overhead, train a team, plan an event, etc.?Whether you decide to enlist the help of a professional resume writer or go it alone, all of this information is necessary to frame your expertise appropriately. Now that you have this information, look around to see what positions are available at your target companies and beyond. This is a great way to compare your list of accomplishments with the job descriptions. Do your qualifications measure up?Every job seeker should hav e a list of target companies in their industry. This allows your job search to be focused and streamlined. Next, do some research to see if these companies are planning or sponsoring events, and whether you can attend. Whether its a black tie gala or a charity toy drive, these events are a great opportunity to make connections. Not only will you be able to network in person, but you can use your attendance as an opening in cold calls and emails. For exampleI hope this message finds you well. My name is Niya Allen-Vatel, and I am a professional resume writer and career coach in the New York City area. On __________, I was inspired by the keynote speech you gave at the 63 rd annual ABC Corporation charity event. To me, it was a rallying cry rather than a speech. I would love to connect with you to discuss _____________ and ask you a few questions regarding the nuggets of wisdom you so graciously shared that night. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to connecting in the fut ure. Whether you meet the contact in-person or send them an email afterward, being at these events will allow you to gain ground over someone who sends a generic cover letter because youve learned about the company from the inside out. Also, touch base with people youve lost touch with this year. Sending a holiday greeting can help you reconnect and reopen doors you thought were closed. If they werent thinking about you before, they will be now. And finally, if networking in person is too intimidating, go the virtual route first. If the idea of revamping your personal brand and making a career transition is too overwhelming and confusing, this may be the time to enlist help to guide you through the process. This goes back to the age-old question of, How badeanstalt do you want it? You may have to forego gift shopping or a fabulous trip to make it work, but whats the alternative? Repeating the same year over again? When deciding to enlist help, do your research. Make sure the care er consultant is qualified and has the right credentials and experience to address your specific career needs and industry. To start, review the directories of The National Resume Writers Association , Career Directors International , The Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches and LinkedIn . Preparing for Air Force Weapons Training

Preparing for Air Force Weapons TrainingPreparing for Air Force Weapons TrainingOkay, okay, we cant teach you how to shoot an M-16 rifle through an online course or article. Youll have to wait until you get to basic training for some hands-on experience. Everyone in Air Force Basic Training fires the M-16 rifle on a standardized Air Force firing course. By standardized, it means it qualifies as a regular Air Force qualification. That means (if you shoot good enough), you can qualify as an expert, and be awarded the Air Force Small Arms Expert Ribbon. In basic training, the M-16 was initially the only weapon you were trained to fire. As of November 2008, recruits in Air Force Basic Training were also required to fire the M-9 pistol. For about 80 percent of you, the M-16 and the M-9 will be the only weapons you will ever fire during your entire Air Force career. Certain career fields (such as Security Forces, Pararescue, Combat Controller), need to qualify on other weapons, as well, su ch as the M-4 Carbine, or even the M-249 Machine Gun. These folks will initially qualify with these weapons during technical training, and periodically throughout their career. How often you must qualify with the M-16, (and/or the M-9) after basic training, depends primarily on your job, your unit of assignment, and/or your deployment availability status. For most of you, youll shoot the M-16 once per year. Those assigned to specific types of deployment duties (such as classified courier duty), will also periodically re-qualify with the M-9 pistol). Air Force Manual 36-2227 governs the Air Force Small Arms Training Program, Volume 2, Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Training Programs. The M-16 training procedures are contained in Chapter One of this publication. As we said above, there is no way we can teach you how to handle and fire the M-16 Rifle over the Internet. In fact, during AFBMT, youll spend about six hours in the classroom, learning how to do this before you even get to fire one round. What we can do is briefly describe the range procedures, so that everything will be just a little mora familiar to you when you get your chance to attend this training. The M-16 Rifle The M-16 rifle is a magazine-fed (box type magazine, 30 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition), gas operated, air-cooled shoulder weapon. It is capable of being fired either semi-automatically or automatic 3-round bursts. It has a maximum effective range of 550 meters. The barrel is surrounded by a heat-resistant, polycarbonate material that serves as a hand and forearm guard. The buttstock is also made of a durable polycarbonate material of high impact strength. The weapon weighs 8.5 pounds unloaded loaded, it weighs 8.79 pounds. Accessories that can be used with the weapon include the bipod, bayonet, M204 40mm grenade launcher, and night vision devices. The Air Force Qualification Course During the actual firing, you will fire a total of 80 rounds at a man-sized target (upper body only) at ranges from 75 meters to 300 meters (remember a meter is just a tad longer than a yard 1 meter 1.094 yards). The range at Lackland is a short range so that you will be firing from only 25 yards away, however, the target sizes are shrunk to represent the proper sizes at the specified distances (75 meters, 175 meters, and 300 meters). Heres how the shot groups break down Phase I Battle Sight Grouping and Zero During this phase, you are sighting in the rifle. After each shot group, you (and the instructor) will examine the target. The instructor will give you advice (breathing properly, jerking the trigger) to correct anything that you are doing wrong. Additionally, the instructor will tell you how to adjust your sights, to correct your grouping. All of the shots in Phase I are in the prone, supported position. That means you are lying on the ground, on your stomach at a slight angle to the target, with your rifle supported on top of a sandbag. The targets for this pha se are all man-sized targets at 75 meters. 4 rounds (one magazine with 4 rounds loaded) at 75 meters. Check target and make sight adjustments.3 rounds (one magazine with 3 rounds loaded) at 75 meters. Check target and make sight adjustments.3 rounds (one magazine with 3 rounds loaded) at 75 meters. Check target and make sight adjustments.16 Total Rounds Phase II - Practice During the practice phase, you fire a total of 24 rounds from 4 different positions. A couple of twists are thrown in here first of all, each round is timed, and youll have to reload a fresh magazine during the round. Keep your head and dont rush, as there is plenty of time to make your shots count and still change the magazine and shoot again within the prescribed time limit. During the practice round, you fire a t a man-sized target at 175 meters. Prone Supported - 6 rounds (two magazines with 3 rounds loaded in each), at 175 meters. 50 second time limit.Prone Supported - 6 rounds (two magazines with 3 rounds loaded in each), at 175 meters. 50 second time limit.Kneeling Supported - 6 rounds (two magazines with 3 rounds loaded in each), at 175 meters. 50 second time limit.Over Barricade Supported - 6 rounds (two magazines with 3 rounds loaded in each), at 175 meters. 50 second time limit.24 Total Rounds Phase III - Qualification It is the phase that counts. You will fire a total of 40 rounds at a man-sized target at 300 meters. To passthe qualification course, you must hit the target at least 20 times. Those who hit the target at least 35 times qualify for the Small Arms Expert Ribbon. Prone Supported - 10 rounds (one 4-round magazine, two 3-round magazines), at 300 meters. 90 second time limit.Prone Unsupported - 10 rounds (one 4-round magazine, two 3-round magazines), at 300 meters. 90 second time limit.Kneeling Supported - 10 rounds (one 4-round magazine, two 3-round magazines), at 300 meters. 90 second time limit.Over Barricade Supported - 10 rounds (one 4-round magazine, two 3-round magazines), at 300 meters. 90 second time limit.40 Total Round Some Firing Tips Sight Alignment Sight alignment is accomplished by aligning the front and rear sight. The front sight post will be aligned directly in the center of the rear sight. Once this is accomplished, the shooter will then need to concentrate on the front sight until it is crystal clear. It is accomplished by placing your face on the stock of the rifle approximately 2 to 3 fingers away from the charging handle. If your face is farther away, proper sight alignment will be difficult. Sight Picture The sight picture is simply the addition of the target to the sight alignment. Once the front and rear sights are aligned, place them on the target. The front sight post will cover up the bottom half of the target. Y ou will bedrngnis cover the entire target with the front sight post. The front sight must remain crystal clear when aiming at the target, and the target will remain blurry. Wobble Area When you aim at the target, notice your front sight wobbles back and forth. It is caused by heartbeat and muscle fatigue - It cant be stopped, ignore it. Breath Control Hold your breath while firing any shot. Take a deep breath, let it out until you reach your natural respiratory pause, and then hold it. Relax all muscles in your body, and begin your trigger squeeze. Trigger Control Accomplished by applying slow, steady pressure to the trigger. There should be a 4 to 6 second period from the time you start applying pressure to the time the weapon fires. Do not take your finger off the trigger completely when releasing the pressure on the trigger. Anticipation Concentrate on the front sight. Keep it aligned as your finger eases the trigger back. Do not anticipate the weapon going off let it surprise y ou. Follow Through Keep your face on the stock and your firing and support hands in place throughout the movement of your weapon.

3 Things Im Doing to Find My Own Definition of Success

3 Things Im Doing to Find My Own Definition of Success 3 Things Im Doing to Find My Own Definition of Success Article by Mary SauerFor as long as I can remember, I have been a fairly ambitious person. As a young child, I kept journals filled with ideas about what my future would look like. From dream jobs to where I would live, I always had a good idea of what I wanted to accomplish. As Ive grown older, starting a family and a career along the way, Ive experienced something I didnt expect Ive grown tired of chasing success. For a couple years now, Ive felt that Ive been falling short. Ive been frustrated to find Im always a couple steps behind where I expected I would be at any given moment. More maddening, perhaps, is that its been a while since I have felt I was truly giving my all to accomplish what I had set out to do.Another version of myself, one characterized by avoidance and self-sabotage, has been winning more often than I care to admit. It wasnt until recently that I realize d what wasbehind my resistance to moving forward.Itisnt that I had suddenly become lazy.Instead, I had adopted a version of success that was a poor fit for me.Finding your own definition of success is important to living a fulfilled life. For a lot of millennials, it has been difficult to connect witha personal vision of success because were constantly inundated by outside opinions at any given time. In an age of business coaches, gurus, and social media influencers, its harder than ever to decide for yourself what a life well lived looks like.I realized I was no longer emotionally connected to the success I was working so hard to achieve. It was a lightbulb moment for meI stepped back to see I had adopted another persons definition of success, even down to an income goal and work lifestyle, and it fit like a shoe three sizes too big.To correct this mistake, Ive been redefining my version of success. It hasnt been an overnight change, but Ive learned a few things that have helped me resist the pressure to model my personal success after the success of others1. Im Taking a Break From the NoiseCareer coaching has a time and place for many professionals, but it isnt for me at this specific point in my life. Ive learned a lot by joining mastermind groups and taking courses, butthese thingsalso pressure a lot of people to set goals for success that match up with the status quo rather than their own personal needs. At least for now, Im taking a break from all the noise. I unenrolled from one course, left a few networking groups, and simply stopped logging into another course I plan to finish once my mind is in a better place. I even went as far as unfollowing some influencers on social media, because I found I was really sensitive to talk of income goals, lifestyle achievements, and the pressure to keep up.2. Im Practicing Self-AwarenessAccording to clinical psychologist Gladys Rodriguez, self-awareness plays an important role in creating an individualized definition of success.Start connecting with your feelings, Rodriguez advises. Practice breathing deeply and in silence to connect with that inner voice that will tell you what you need and what you want. For me, thispractice hasmeant spending the time Iused to invest in coaching and mastermind groups on reflection. Ive done a lot of journalingto explore my desires for the future. This time of intense self-awareness has allowed me to connect with a more holistic view of success. While I was once fairly committed to a singular goal of achievement as a writer, Ive become more aware of how important it is to define success for all areas of my life, including my family life, my health, and having fun.3. Im Celebrating How Far Ive ComeMost importantly, it became clear that the habit I had of constantly sizing myself up against the successes of others had to stop.Stop looking at social media to determine what you are supposed to do when or what success means, advises Rodriguez. Shenotesplenty of rese arch has found it detrimental to use social media as a benchmark for determining your own success.Im trying to replace these comparisons with small celebrations of how far Ive come. In the past, I havent done a great job of making a big deal about my achievements simply because they felt like nothing more than small steps in the grand scheme of things. Now, Im sharing wins with friends, writing about them down in my journal, or treating myself to a glass of wine when Ive reached a new milestone in my personal or professional life.Instead of looking for what you dont have or what you are missing, begin noticing the steps you have taken to achieve what you have, the talents you have cultivated, and the milestones you have achieved, Rodriguez says. Nothing is too small.Ultimately, my effort to redefine success has been an exercise in being more present in my life instead of spending too much time worrying about the future or what I could have done differently in the past. It has been a refreshing chance to slow down and acknowledge that success is not some distant milestone, but something I am experiencing right this moment.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Mary Sauer is a freelance writer living in the Midwest. Four Reasons to have an Economic Recession

Four Reasons to have an Economic RecessionFour Reasons to have an Economic RecessionFour Reasons to have an Economic Recession MuzioIm as hopeful as anyone that the worst of the recession is over. Ive felt the pinch myself and seen disastrous results on loved ones. This has not been fun. Still, at the risk of being labeled overly optimistic or perhaps overly pessimistic I have to say that Ive also seen some good come out of it.So, I respectfully and humbly offer four reasons why, for the sake of good business, we needed to have an economic downturn.1. Recessions Demand Clarification of PurposeIn my book figuratively and literally clear purpose precedes everything else. While thats easy to say, its remarkably difficult to do. Defining and maintaining an appropriate set of goals for ones own life is challenge enough doing so for an entire organization is orders of magnitude mora difficult. When times are good and money is flowing, its easy to let the mission get a little fuzzy. One client of mine is, lets say, one of the worlds premier producers of widgets. Several years ago they decided to expand to their product offering, including user-experience products, component manufacture, environments for widget-using groups, devices using products similar to theirs, platforms in new markets and more. Any one of unterstellung might have been a good strategic move tackling them all at once created the same kind of confusion in the corporation that you felt while reading this paragraph. It didnt work and everything including the primary product line suffered. When the recessioncame around, they got serious, and got focused. Now, they are the worlds premier producer of widgets again, making a small but manageable set of strategic advances.2. A Recession Prompts Waste ReductionWasting resources on too many strategic advances is problem enough, but in many cases waste goes much deeper. From opulent travel policies made famous by high-level executives to misinformed investm ents made in poorly understood (but compellingly packaged) mortgage instruments, to overkill and overrun on green employee programs, groups of people are notoriously bad at deciding what to do with money. In this area, recession creates focus.Much of the group work I do, for example, happens at off-site retreats. In 2009, my clients evaluated how much they spend on those events, and what return they get on the investment. After those decisions were made, I found myself still on the invitation list, but to less expensive venues with less elaborate meals and activities. Organizations that have large conference rooms, for example, are now using them more often in lieu of rented space. The recession didnt stop all capacity development activity, but it did force companies to get clearer on which parts of those activities paid off.3. The Upside of DownsizingWhen you gain weight, you can either go on a diet or you can buy larger pants. The corporate equivalent to this maxim is that when yo u get busier, you can either get more organized and effective or you can add staff. When everyone is overloaded in an economic boom, the easy answer is to hire. But adding staff adds opportunities to create even more work, creating a dangerous cycle of headcount growth without real bottom-line justification. While Id rather see companies creating jobs than eliminating them, I also want those jobs to be viable in the long term. Unnecessary hires lead to waste, layoffs and restructuringsometimes a diet is the wiser option. As the economy turned down, many of my clients began cancelling open requisitions for new headcount as part of their recession staffing solutionstrategy.Remaining requisitions had to be carefully justified and tied directly to bottom line need.As the economy picks up, its important to continue to engage in practical recruiting strategies with potential candidates who have the capacity to address ever-increasing demands for specific skills. To be sure, overly draconian requisition requirements can stifle necessary growth. But you have to admit that sensible hiring is a sensible requirement.4. The Common Cause EffectHave you ever noticed how quickly a group of people will align against a shared enemy?Nothing breeds solidarity like a common cause.Excessive nationalism, over-competitiveness and myopic focus on the nearest competitor are some of the less desirable organizational manifestations of this very human trait. It can lead to problems, but it can also lead to solutions. The recessionhas been a perfect common enemy against which we could all align. My favorite story of this phenomenon comes from a software company whose leaders determined that revenue delays would put them out of business. They didnt want to get beat and they knew they needed help. So, they gathered their employees to brainstorm solutions, and asked a very simple question what do we do to keep the recession from winning?Their answer was simple and brilliant use our existing talents to develop iPhone apps in the interim.Their solution worked, their company is still in business. Their apps are now a profitable sideline to their core offerings. Why Does It Have to Hurt?Interesting points, you may be thinking, but I just dont know.Be honest. This whole article presents an uncomfortable notion, doesnt it?Why would an otherwise sane author extol the virtues of economic contraction?Who in his right mind takes a pro-recession stance? My answer is not mine.It belongs to George Santayana, who said those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.Im hoping that by paying attention to the benefits of this recession, we can avoid the next one.Actually, many of the lessons arent all that complicated. The four Ive discussed here be clear about your purpose, avoid waste, expand your small businesshiring when it makes sense, and finally, make sure your teams have a shared cause are common sense, applied. You may be able to think of some other lessons as well.Take a moment and ask yourself, What have I learned from the recession?Youve already been forced to live through it you might as well extract some value. If were lucky, we all will have learned to be better business people, and to create stronger futures. Thats why, despite the possibility of appearing to be out of my mind, Im going to continue being grateful for the lessons the recession has taught us.And, Im going to continue hoping that its over.Author BioEdward G.
